According to Macy’s CEO Terry Lundergan, hard times for middle-income consumers is making it difficult for many to spend freely on discretionary items such as clothing. While Macy’s sales figures have been disappointing this year, they are hardly the only retailer facing tough straits. Some competitors, like JCPenney, are doing even worse.
